The Black Starlets of Ghana thrashed host nation India by 4-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in their last group game in group A encounter to qualify for round of 16.
The host nation had nothing to lose coming into this game, against the backdrop of losing their two previous games and were left with no point but needed to bow out on a high note. Ghana on the other hand needed nothing but a win at all cost after picking a win and a defeat in two previous games.
India and Ghana started the game on high note with the later dominating in the early stages.
After mounting an early pressure on the Indians, the Starlets finally got the ball at the back of the net on the 5th minute through Captain Eric Ayiah but was adjudged offside by the assistant line two.
Ghana dominated play – created chances but the forward line fluffed their opportunity whenever they were called upon.
The host nation occasionally came out of their shells but failed to test the resolve goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad.
Ghana finally got the opening goal of the game on the 43rd minute, after Eric Ayiah latched onto a spilled ball from goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem to send the ball to the roof of the net.
Back from recess, the Starlets continued from where they left off. India at this stage looked tired and lethargic. It was a one way traffic with Ghana asking all the questions.
Ayiah doubled the lead and got his second goal of the day on the 51st minute when the defence of India went sleeping.
Coach Fabin’s two substitutions in the second half all got their names on the scoresheet – Richard Danso and Emmanuel Toku got the third and fourth goal on the 82nd and 85th minute to wrap up the thrashing.
With a better goal difference against USA and Colombia, Ghana lead group A with six points and a plus of four goals.
They now hope to meet best third place team in group C, E and D in the next round of the competition.
