The Tamale Sports stadium yesterday was officially renamed to the Alhaji Aliu Mahama stadium by the vice president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Prior to election 2016, President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his NPP government promised Ghanaians to rename the Tamale stadium after the late vice President should they win power.
After emerging victors in the election, the NPP government has fulfilled its promise and yesterday at a ceremony in Tamale, the vice President Dr. Bawumia on behalf of the President officially launched the Aliu Mahama Stadium.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, the vice President did acknowledge the immense contribution the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama had towards sports especially in the northern part of Ghana where the stadium is located.
A game was played between selected players in the Ghana league to represent Southern and Northern sectors of which the Southern sector won the game by 2-1 against their Northern counterparts.
Kwasi Donsu of Medeama SC and Kwame Kizito of Hearts of Oak scored the two goals for Southern sector and Saddick Adams of Kotoko scored the consolation goal for the Northern side.
The eventual winners, Southern sector which was led by Head Coach C.K Akunor and Laryea Kingston were handed a trophy and a cash of GHC 50,000.
