NDC are dreaming if they think Ghanaians will give them power in 2020 – NPP MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Collins Owusu Amankwah, has reiterated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning the 2020 polls is nothing but mere illusion among party officials.

Hon. Collins, speaking on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokroko’, countered the assertion by the Deputy Director of Communication of the NDC, Fred Agbenyo, that the main opposition party will implement all recommendations in the 13-member Kwesi Botchwey report in order to come back to power in the next general elections.

According to him, while the NDC will be busy following recommendations in the Kwesi Botchwey report, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will do all they can to keep their current position in Ghana’s governance.

‘‘While they are trying to follow the recommendations, we are also finding ways to make sure they don’t come back to power. We are not just going to sit down doing nothing, and so it will be a dream for the NDC to think they will come back to power in 2020. They should stop daydreaming. They will stay in opposition for a long time.’’

Professor Kwesi Botchwey, a former Finance Minister, presented a 455-page report to the NDC on Monday, June 19, 2017 on why the party suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2016 elections after more than five months of research across the country.

‘‘We also have recommendations on ways in which we can and must improve the collation of election results. We also believe that steps ought to be taken by the party to reconnect itself properly to our social democratic roots.’’ Kwesi Botchwey said at the party’s headquarters.

Below are some of the many recommendations presented in the report.

  1. That the party puts together a group of credible and eminent members of the party to undertake a peacebuilding and healing tour.
  2. That the party takes steps to restore the integrity of the biometric register and the expanded Electoral College.
  3. The party recommends that steps be taken to restore the capacity and effectiveness of the party’s organs especially at the branch level where the party believes these organs are the most critical because they are the party’s immediate connection to the people.
  4. The party also has recommendations on ways the party can and must improve the collation of election results.
